Alcohol consumption and cardiovascular diseases in rural China

High consumers of alcohol may be at risk of developing hypertension and coronary heart disease (CHD).

​This study analyzed the risk of cardiovascular disease between consumers and non-consumers of alcohol. The study population included over 11,000 Chinese men and women living in rural areas.

The researchers discovered that heavy drinking of alcohol increased the risk of hypertension and coronary heart disease (CHD) by 1.7-fold and 1.3-fold respectively. The findings of this study reveal that alcohol may promote the development of hypertension and coronary heart disease.
