Statins and the risk of herpes zoster: a population-based cohort study.

The use of statin medications may up the risk of herpes zoster infection.

​This study examined whether statin therapy is tied to higher risk of contracting herpes zoster infection. Researchers compared the incidence of herpes zoster infection in almost 1 million users and non-users of statins aged 66 years and above. 

Researchers discovered that the risk of having herpes zoster rose with the use of statins. The findings of this study show that patients on statin therapy may be highly vulnerable to herpes zoster infection.
