Dose-risk relationships between cigarette smoking and cervical cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Cigarette smoking may facilitate the transformation of normal cells in the cervix into cancerous tumors.

​This study focused on the role of cigarette smoking in the development of cervical cancer. Researchers performed a meticulous meta-analysis on data extracted from 109 studies.

Researchers discovered that cervical cancer occurred at a high rate among current smokers, irrespective of the human papilloma virus (HPV) infection status of a woman. In contrast, cessation of smoking was associated with a marked reduction in cervical cancer risk in this study.
