I also have personal acquaintances that have ended up in hospital ICU for the same reason. I, myself am experiencing inflated insulin cost frustrations (and anger).More
I have three things I would like to share on this subject:
1) A type-1 diabetics' insulin requirements can be cut in half simply be cutting fat from the diet. Type-1 diabetics that follow traditional low-carb diets are also type-2 diabetics due to the high fat content of a low-carb diet. Fat induces insulin resistance which reduces metabolic efficiency, thus requiring almost double the insulin needs compared to insulin sensitive, high metabolic efficiency. The deception is that insulin resistance does not dissipate immediately (within normal human attention span). For me, fat induced insulin resistance takes two days to start, then thirty plus days to clear, so patience is required. That delay is why I am such a fat-free fanatic. Ensuring I never eat anything that contains any ingredient that contains greater than 10% calories from fat (even if that ingredient is just a "trace" of the dish) has become my standard for maximizing insulin sensitivity.
2) Another insulin sensitivity booster / insulin dose reducer is aerobic exercise. The more the better, however the same patience is required. Also note that exercise is not a substitute for low-fat.
3) My wife, Heidi found that insulin can be purchased at a fraction of the cost from Canadian pharmacies. She found the insulin that I use can be purchased on-line for only $47.99 per vial instead of $280.00 purchased here locally. Here is the link: https://rxcanada4less.com/. This is just one Canadian pharmacy, I suspect there are more, but this one was found and put to use.
P.S. About a year ago, I mentioned that I am writing a book on my type-1 diabetes control method. Well, I'm afraid it is still in progress. It's taking much longer than originally expected. I decided to write it because I have discovered that my control method is considerably different from the traditional method. I feel it works so well for me that I wish to share it. My method uses a whole food plant based high carb, very low-fat diet - without blood-sugar spikes or lows. My method is derived from the art of electronic engineering. The title is; "Synchronous Push-Pull Type-1 Diabetes Control - The Non-Diabetic Diabetic Method". I hope to have it done soon, but, since I have been working on it for almost a year, and I'm still plugging away at it, I'm not sure what "soon" means! When it is finally finished, I plan to self-publish it as a PDF file for free download. Then decide how to proceed by the feedback from the PDF version.
In Health,

It has become evident to me that my T1D control method is probably more different from "conventional" than I had previously thought. As mentioned in my "Confession" talk / post ( https://www.drcarney.com/blog/condition-related/my-diabetes-confession), what I learned about T1D control was mostly in an information vacuum. I admit that much of the vacuum was self-induced as I rejected the methods prescribed by my doctor as well as the information from the American Diabetes Association plus what was taught in all of the T1D management classes that I attended. The rejection was because I felt it wasn't working and all of the sources followed the same method. This isn't to say that I think I'm smarter than the experts, it's just that I had a different goal. I didn't want to "survive" diabetes; Instead, I didn't want to be diabetic - even if that requires a lot more effort.
I mention this because I am discovering that many times when people ask me questions, I'm not on the same "page" or "wavelength". I find that I am not confidently familiar with many of the conventional terms, schedules, methods and equipment. I've been using my method for so long that "conventional" seems foreign.
With that realization, I have decided to write a book on my method. It is titled; "Synchronous Push-Pull Type-1 Diabetes Control - The Non-Diabetic Diabetic Method" (SPP method for short). I am working on it in my "spare time", so I don't have a completion date projection yet. My plan is to post it here as a PDF download once it is done.
We are all here to learn from each other, but I wanted to mention this as I suspect that my method may not mix well with conventional T1D methods. Sometimes, when asked a question, I'm not sure if I'm on the same page as the person asking. I think that questions are most often asked from the conventional T1D method viewpoint (of which I have essentially no experience), but I'm answering from my SPP T1D method view point, thus, my answer may not be a perfect fit. I just wanted everyone to be aware of that in our communications.
Thanks to all,
Ken

I'm curious about members' exercise plans, and how you all have been able to balance hypo's with intense exercise. I find that a piece of fruit with a few nuts and lowering my basal by about 80% for 30 minutes prior to and during my workout seems to help. I also have been exploring starting with weights and ending with cardio, versus starting with cardio and ending with weights. However, I am quite variable and have found recently that my hypo's have gotten more intense, so I have to stop mid-workout which is quite frustrating!!More

I suspect that once a few discussions are created there that this will be easier to find. :-)Post is under moderationStream item published successfully. Item will now be visible on your stream. -
