Strict adherence to a high fiber diet may decrease cancer, cardiovascular disease, and total mortality risk.

This study investigated the connection between the consumption of fiber-containing foods and the risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and other causes. Researchers monitored the dietary and mortality records of over 85,000 US men and women who took part in the Prostate Lung Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer (PLCO) Screening Trial. 

Researchers discovered that high compared to low consumers of foods packed with soluble and insoluble fiber enjoyed a significant reduction in the risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular ailments, and other chronic diseases. This study documented a favorable relationship between increased intake of dietary fiber and decreased cancer, cardiovascular, and total mortality risk.
