Fondness for fruits and vegetables may help thwart the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

This study analyzed the correlation between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Korea. A total of 52,280 Korean men and women volunteered for this study. All the participants completed dietary questionnaires and were observed for the development of NAFLD over a 4-year period.

Researchers found out that participants who consumed the most amounts of fruits and vegetables had better chances of staying free from NAFLD than their counterparts who ate little or none of these plant foods. The study concluded that "Fruit and vegetable consumption can protect against NAFLD and associated metabolic co-morbidities."
