Meta-analysis: Tobacco smoking may enhance the risk of acute pancreatitis.
A significant increase in acute pancreatitis risk is associated with both current and former smokers.
This meta-analysis evaluated the effect of tobacco smoking on the odds of developing acute pancreatitis. Researchers analyzed 12 observational studies that examined the link between smoking and acute pancreatitis risk.
Researchers observed that the likelihood of having acute pancreatic was high in both current and former smokers compared to non-smokers. The incidence of acute pancreatitis was found to increase by 40% for every extra 10 sticks of cigarettes smoked per day. The results of this meta-analysis showed elevated acute pancreatitis risk is associated with cigarette smoking.
