Statins and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus: cohort study using the UK clinical practice pesearch datalink.

Statin therapy may be a contributing factor to the development of type 2 diabetes.

​The objective of this study was to examine whether an association exists between exposure to statins and type 2 diabetes incidence. Researchers tracked the number of statin prescriptions and frequency of type 2 diabetes diagnoses in a study group made of over 2 million men and women residing in the UK. 

Researchers noticed that the risk of type 2 diabetes went with with increase in the use of statin medications. Data from this study indicate that the use of statins might be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
