Increased risk of diabetes with statin treatment is associated with impaired insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion: a 6 year follow-up study of the METSIM cohort.

Individuals who take statins are highly vulnerable to type 2 diabetes mellitus.

This study assessed the relationship between statin treatment and the odds of developing type 2 diabetes. Researchers tracked the medical data and estimated the diabetes mellitus risk ratio of 8,749 non-diabetic male subjects within the age bracket of 45-73 years.

The team of investigators discovered that a 46% increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes was associated with statin intake. The researchers suggested that statins increased diabetes risk by reducing insulin sensitivity and inhibiting the secretion of insulin. The findings of this study provide further evidence that statins may accelerate the development of type 2 diabetes in humans.
