Ultra-Processed Food Consumption and Depressive Symptoms in a Mediterranean Cohort

The love for ultra-processed foods may give rise to depression in young adults.

This study clarified the role high dietary ingestion of ultra-processed foods play in the development of depression in young adults. Researchers gathered data on the dietary choices and mental health of 596 young Italian men and women within the age bracket of 18-35 years.

Researchers found out that a great number of consumers of ultra-processed foods reported suffering from symptoms of depression. This study identified high dietary ingestion of ultra-processed foods as one of the factors that can trigger the onset of depression in young individuals.
