Ultra-processed foods, changes in blood pressure and incidence of hypertension: the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)Ultra-processed foods, changes in blood pressure and incidence of hypertension: the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)

Devout consumption of ultra-processed foods may heighten an individual's odds of developing hypertension.

This study was carried out to confirm the harmful effects of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on blood pressure. Researchers followed over 8,500 civil servants from Brazil for 4 years, monitoring their diets and blood pressures.

Researchers discovered that consistent consumers of ultra-processed foods had high tendency to become hypertensive. This study recommended that "reducing UPF consumption is thus important to promote health and prevent hypertension."
