Alcohol consumption and oesophageal squamous cell cancer risk in east Africa: findings from the large multicentre ESCCAPE case-control study in Kenya, Tanzania, and Malawi

Alcohol intake might be a contributing factor to the development of esophageal cancer.

This study investigated whether alcohol use is tied to the development of cancer of the esophagus. Researchers collated data on the alcohol drinking habits and esophageal cancer occurrence rates among 2,625 men and women recruited from Kenya, Malawi, and Tanzania. 

Researchers noticed that esophageal cancer was diagnosed at a higher frequency among alcohol consumers compared to non-consumers. This study further highlights the cancer-promoting action of alcohol on the esophagus.
