Protective effects of dietary carotenoids on risk of hip fracture in men: the Singapore Chinese Health Study.
Eating foods rich in carotenoids regularly may brighten a man's chances of avoiding hip fracture.
This study evaluated the impact of high carotenoid diets on the risk of hip fracture in Chinese men. Researchers monitored the diets of 63,257 Chinese men and women within the age bracket of 45-73 years for a duration of 5 years. The relative risk of hip fracture of all the participants in this study was also determined.
Researchers discovered that men who consumed the most amounts of foods high in carotenoids, including α-carotene, β-carotene, and lutein/zeaxanthin, had better chances of avoiding hip fracture compared to their counterparts who refrained from eating these foods. Regular ingestion of carotenoid-rich foods was found to reduce the risk of hip fracture in men by 26-39 per cent. The results of this study show that adequate intake of carotenoid-containing foods may help guard against the occurrence of hip fracture in men.
