Cancers in Australia in 2010 attributable to inadequate consumption of fruit, non-starchy vegetables and dietary fibre

Upping our level of consumption of fiber-rich foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, may do our chances of warding off cancer a whole lot of good.

This study analyzed the impact of dietary ingestion of foods loaded with fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, on the burden of cancer in Australia. Researchers studied data on the dietary pattern and prevalence of cancer among Australian men and women. 

The team of investigators discovered that approximately 1.4% and 0.3% of all cases of cancer in Australia resulted from insufficient consumption of fruits and non-starchy vegetables respectively. This study projected that adequate intake of fiber-containing foods, especially fruits and vegetables, could reduce the incidence of cancer by 4% in Australia.
