Another study confirms additional reasons why it pays to follow a plant-based diet. It turns out that a whole-food, plant-based diet can help reverse angina without medication and procedures. Angina is a type of chest pain or discomfort resulting from reduced blood flow to the heart. Angina is not the same as an heart attack, but it is an indicator that a person is at high risk of having an heart attack. In fact, angina is a symptom of coronary artery disease, which affects more than 12 million Americans.

Some Case Studies

A team of heart doctors at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, USA, advised a 60-year old man who presented with typical angina to adopt a whole-food, plant-based diet, which mainly consists of fruits, vegetables, legumes, potatoes, and whole grains. Before switching to a plant-based diet, the patient experienced discomfort in his chest after walking a distance of one-half block and had elevated blood pressure and lipid levels. Within a few months of making this dietary change, his symptoms improved tremendously; his blood pressure and cholesterol reduced significantly and he was able to walk a mile without any signs of angina. After 2 years on this dietary therapy, he could jog more than 4 miles, went off his medications for coronary artery disease, and even showed no sign of the disease. This massive improvement in the patient was achieved without a single drug or invasive procedure.

Similar improvements were observed in a 77-year old woman suffering from angina who switched from a western diet to a whole-food, plant-based diet for 5 months. However, her angina symptoms returned when she returned to a western diet.

These results are typical of what I often see happen with my patients when they adopt my Starch-Smart® System

The American Heart Association estimate that about 8.2 million Americans are suffering from angina. Angina is a warning sign of a heart disease, which in the past has been the leading cause of death in the United States, for most ethnicities. For individuals who are battling with angina, eating a vegan diet (free from animal products) is a heart-smart move, although a vegan who also eats ONLY oil-free whole foods which contain less than 20% of their calories from fat is even safer than ethical vegans. Whole food low fat plant based foods can help to prevent and reverse angina and improve cardiovascular health in general.
