Antidepressant Use in the Elderly Is Associated With an Increased Risk of Dementia

Antidepressant use may boost the risk of dementia in older men and women.

This study determined the role antidepressant medications play in the development of dementia in the elderly. Researchers matched antidepressant usage with incidence of dementia among 3,688 men and women aged 60 years and above who were attending primary care clinics in the United States. 

Researchers found out that users of antidepressant drugs faced increased risk of suffering from memory loss. The results of this study support that the view that antidepressant use may facilitate the onset of dementia in older men and women.
