A causal relationship between alcohol intake and type 2 diabetes mellitus: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study

Heavy alcohol intake may lead to the development of type 2 diabetes in men and women.

This study evaluated if drinking alcohol is tied to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Researchers used a combination of validated questionnaires and hospital records to determine the amount of alcohol consumed and incidence of type 2 diabetes in a study group made up of over 50,000 Korean men and women.

Researchers observed that type 2 diabetes occurred at a high rate among participants who drank at least 20 grams of alcohol per day. Data from this study indicate that high consumption of alcohol may be a contributing factor to the development of type 2 diabetes.
