Individuals on high refined grain diet tend to end up with metabolic syndrome.
This study estimated the risk of metabolic syndrome attributed to the consumption of refined grains. With the aid of validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers collated and evaluated the diets of 2,042 men and women aged 20 years and above recruited from the Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiology Study (CURES). The metabolic syndrome diagnosis status of all the participants was ascertained via hospital records.
Researchers discovered that participants at the top of the refined grain consumption ladder faced increased risk of suffering from metabolic syndrome compared to their counterparts who rarely or completely avoided these foods. This study demonstrated that elevated intake of refined grains may favor the development of metabolic syndrome in men and women.
