Grain consumption and risk of gastric cancer: a meta-analysis.

Indulgence in refined grains may put an individual at high risk of developing stomach cancer.

This meta-analysis was undertaken to evaluate the relationship between the consumption of whole and refined grains and the occurrence of gastric (stomach) cancer. Researchers compiled data obtained from 19 published studies.

Researchers observed that regular intake of whole grains decreased the risk of stomach cancer by 13%. On the other hand, a 36% increase in the risk of gastric cancer was found in subjects who ate generous portions of refined grains regularly. The data from this meta-analysis reveal that diets rich in whole grains may help guard against the development of stomach cancer.
