Cardiovascular disease mortality and cancer incidence in vegetarians: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

Habitual intake of vegetarian diets may be tied to lower risk of cancer and mortality from cardiovascular disease.

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to review previously published studies that examined the relationship between compliance with vegetarian diets and cancer development and cardiovascular disease mortality risk. A total of 7 studies were included in this meta-analysis.

Researchers noticed that strict adherence to vegetarian diets decreased the risk of acquiring cancer and dying from cardiovascular diseases. In conclusion, the results of this study reveal that vegetarians may have better chances of avoiding cancer and preventing cardiovascular-disease related deaths than non-vegetarians.
