Consuming at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day may help to keep depression at bay.

This study compared the incidence of depression with the frequency of consumption of fruits and vegetables. Researchers charted fruit and vegetable intake levels with the occurrence of depressive symptoms among 14,133 men and women recruited from Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. 

Researchers observed that individuals who ate 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day had great tendency to stay free from depression than their colleagues who rarely consumed these plant foods. This study highlights the preventive effect of higher intake of fruits and vegetables against depression.
