An apple a day may cut down the risk of dying from diseases and other causes in elderly women.

​This research work studied the association between apple intake and mortality risk in elderly women. Researchers monitored the rate of consumption of apples and mortality records among 1,456 elderly women aged 70 years living in Western Australia. 

Researchers noticed low rates of deaths from diseases, particular cancer, and other causes among habitual consumers of apples. Frequent ingestion of banana and other fruits was also found to lessen the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. "Our results support the view that regular apple consumption may contribute to lower risk of mortality," concluded the authors.
