Gestational diabetes mellitus is more likely to occur among women who enjoyed eating fried fish and chicken prior to and during pregnancy.

This study looked at the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) present in women who consistently consumed fried foods before conception and early in pregnancy. Researchers surveyed the diets and medical records of 3,414 US women before and during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes mellitus cases totaling 169 were identified among the participants. 

Researchers discovered regular intake of fried fish and chicken heightened a woman's risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus. A 68% surge in the odds of gestational diabetes was found among women who ate more than 1 serving of fried fish per month. This study points out that frequent consumption of fried fish and chicken before and during pregnancy may give rise gestational diabetes mellitus.
