Dietary Antioxidant Index and the Risk of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis

Optimal consumption of antioxidant-containing foods may help curb the onset and recurrence of aphthous stomatitis.

Aphthous stomatitis also called canker sores are painful sores inside the mouth. This study determined whether an association exists between consuming antioxidants from food sources and the odds of suffering from recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Researchers examined the nutritional habits of 144 individuals who had multiple episodes of aphthous stomatitis and 135 persons without any previous record of this condition.

Researchers noted that regular ingestion of antioxidant-rich foods lessened an individual's risk of suffering from recurrent aphthous stomatitis. This study emphasized the pivotal role dietary intake of antioxidants play in thwarting the development and recurrence of aphthous stomatitis.
