The Relationship between caffeine and coffee consumption and exfoliation glaucoma or glaucoma suspect: a prospective study in two cohorts.

High consumption of caffeinated coffee may trigger the development of exfoliation glaucoma.

Exfoliation glaucoma is the leading cause of secondary open-angle glaucoma globally. This study investigated the caffeine-glaucoma connection hypothesis. Researchers surveyed more than 100,000 US men and women who enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow up Study and Nurse's Health Study for at least 22 years. Over the course of the study, 360 cases of exfoliation glaucoma were documented.

Researchers discovered that habitual intake of 3 or more cups of caffeinated coffee per day raised the risk of having exfoliation glaucoma. The results of this study show that heavy consumers of caffeinated coffee may be highly prone to glaucoma.
