The association between smoking and low back pain: a meta-analysis.

Current and previous cigarette smokers may have a high risk of suffering from low back pain.

This study examined the association between cigarette smoking and the occurrence of low back pain. A team of researchers from Finland systematically reviewed data and evidence extracted from 13 cohort and 27 cross-sectional studies.

The research team found a high prevalence of low back pain among current and previous smokers compared to never smokers. The positive association between cigarette smoking and low back pain was found to be stronger in adolescents than in adults in this study. The findings of this systematic review suggest that the cigarette smokers may be more prone to suffer from low back pain than individuals who have never smoked a stick of cigarette.
