Cigarette smoking and risk of completed suicide: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

Cigarette smokers may have a high tendency of committing suicide.

This study evaluated the connection between cigarette smoking and the likelihood of committing suicide. Researchers analyzed data drawn out from 15 studies involving more than 1 million participants and over 2,000 cases of completed suicide.

The team of investigators observed that suicide rates were high among smokers compared to non-smokers. "Our meta-analysis robustly demonstrates that cigarette smoking is associated with an increased risk of completed suicide, consistent with a dose-response relationship," the authors concluded.
