Cannabis use and age at onset of schizophrenia.

Cannabis use may hasten the onset of schizophrenia.

This study assessed the effect of cannabis usage on the age of onset of schizophrenia. Researchers compared the age of diagnosis of schizophrenia between users and non-users of cannabis.

Researchers noticed that schizophrenia occurred at a earlier age in cannabis users than in non users. Schizophrenia was found to be diagnosed much younger in male cannabis-using patients than in their female counterparts in this study. The results of this study show that cannabis use may accelerate the development of schizophrenia.
