Legumes: the most important dietary predictor of survival in older people of different ethnicities.

High consumption of legumes may lower mortality risk in older people.

This study evaluated the relationship between legume consumption and mortality in elderly people of different ethnicities. Using a validated food frequency questionnaire, researchers examined the diets of 785 70-year-olds and above elderly volunteers residing in 4 different countries (Australia, Greece, Japan, and Sweden) for 7 years. The mortality hazard ratio were also assessed in all the subjects.

Researchers observed a 7-8% decrease in mortality risk in subjects who consumed 20g of legumes daily. The result of this study shows that high intake of legumes is associated with low mortality risk in elderly people.
