Western Dietary Patterns, Foods, and Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

Sticking to a Western dietary pattern may put a pregnant woman on the path to developing gestational diabetes.

This study reviewed the western diet-gestation diabetes connection hypothesis using a meta-analytic approach. Data from a total of 191,589 pregnant women, including 12,331 of them with gestational diabetes, were utilized for this study.

Researchers identified an unfavorable association between the consumption of foods that characterized the Western diet, such as animal meat and fast foods, and heightened risk of gestational diabetes. This study highlighted the contribution of Western diet to the rising incidence of gestational diabetes in pregnant women.
