Frequent consumption of red and processed meats may facilitate the development of bladder cancer.

This study assessed the risk of bladder cancer associated with meat consumption. Researchers surveyed more than 30,000 men and women for 7 years. During the course of the study, 854 participants were diagnosed with bladder cancer.

Researchers noticed high rates of bladder cancer among habitual consumers of red and processed meats. The bladder cancer-promoting effects of red and processed meats were attributed to their high content of nitrites, nitrates, and heterocyclic amines. Data from this study suggest that individuals who want to ward off bladder cancer should take red and processed meats off their diets.
