Association between dietary meat consumption and incident type 2 diabetes: the EPIC-InterAct study.

Generous intake of processed and red meat may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

​This study examined the relationship between meat consumption and type 2 diabetes risk. Researchers reviewed data on the processed and red meat intake of 340,234 adult subjects recruited from eight European countries and estimated the type 2 diabetes odds ratio of each participant in this study. They found out that frequent consumers of processed and red meat had higher chances of developing type 2 diabetes than subject who rarely consume or totally avoid meat. The findings of this study reveal that high intake of red and processed meat products may contribute positively to the development of type 2 diabetes.
