A high salted meat diet may favor the development of pharyngeal and oral (mouth) cancer.

This study aimed to determine the role of salted meat consumption in the development of oral (mouth) and pharyngeal cancer. Researchers matched salted meat intake levels with the oral and pharyngeal diagnosis status of 499 men and women from Uruguay.

The team of investigators observed that the odds of developing oral and pharyngeal cancer rose by 4.7% among heavy consumers of salted meat. This study points out the potential carcinogenic effect of salted meat on the mouth and pharynx.
