Alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk among women in three sub-Saharan African countries.

Fondness for alcohol may trigger the development of breast cancer in women.

This study focused on the relationship between alcohol consumption and the prevalence of breast cancer among black women in Africa. Researchers studied data from questionnaires that assessed the alcohol intake levels of 2,138 women with breast cancer and 2,589 healthy women residing in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Uganda.

Researchers noticed that the risk of breast cancer rose with frequent drinking of alcohol. A 54% elevation in the likelihood of developing breast cancer was found in women who increased the quantity of alcohol consumed over a 10-year period. This study adds to the growing number of research describing alcohol as a risk factor for breast cancer.
