Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment and risk of fractures: a meta-analysis of cohort and case-control studies.

High incidence of fracture may be found among users of antidepressant medications in the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

​Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. This study assessed the association between exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and the probability of suffering from fracture using a meta-analytic approach. Researchers conducted a meta-analysis on data extracted from 13 studies. 

Researchers observed that individuals on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors had high propensity to break their bones. This study demonstrates that the use of antidepressant drugs in the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may put individuals on the path to fracturing their bones.
