Androgen-deprivation therapy and the risk of stroke in patients with prostate cancer.

The chances of experiencing a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) may increase with the use of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in prostate cancer patients.

​This study investigated the risk of stroke associated with the use of androgen deprivation drugs in prostate cancer patients. The study population included more than 22,000 prostate cancer patients who were at least 40 years of age and followed up for an average of 3.9 years. 

Researchers found out long-term use of androgen deprivation drugs heightened the risk of both stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in patients with prostate cancer. The results of this study indicate that androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) may make stroke and transient ischemic attack more likely to occur in prostate cancer patients.
