Excessive alcohol consumption and the risk of knee osteoarthritis: a prospective study from the Osteoarthritis Initiative

Heavy drinkers of alcohol may have a high probability of developing osteoarthritis of the knee.

This study looked at how alcohol intake influences an individual's chances of developing osteoarthritis of the knee. Researchers matched alcohol usage with the occurrence of knee osteoarthritis in a study population comprising of 2,846 men and women aged 45-79 years. 

Researchers found a high incidence of knee osteoarthritis among high consumers of alcohol. This study concluded that excessive consumption of alcohol may heighten an individual's odds of suffering from knee osteoarthritis..
