Sedentary behaviors and risk of depression: a meta-analysis of prospective studies

Choosing a lifestyle that promotes mentally passive sedentary behaviors, such as prolonged watching of television, may make an individual more likely to suffer from depression.

This study deployed a meta-analytic approach to assess the correlation between adopting a sedentary lifestyle and the likelihood of experiencing depression. Data from 12 studies involving over 120,000 men and women were included in this meta-analysis.

Data analysis revealed that depression affected a large percentage of participants who indulged in sedentary behaviors, such as prolonged watching of television. "The present study suggests that mentally passive sedentary behaviors, such as watching television, could increase the risk of depression," the authors noted.
