​Cigarette smoking may contribute to the rapid progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

This study assessed the role of smoking in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). A team of investigators conducted a meticulous meta-analysis on data obtained from 12 scientific publications on the subject.

The research team found out that smoking of 15 or more packs of cigarettes per year hastened the progression of chronic kidney disease. The results of this study showed that smoking may speed up the deterioration of the kidneys in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD).
