Empirically derived food-based inflammatory potential of the diet, irritable bowel syndrome, and its severity

Encouraging the ingestion of pro-inflammatory foods may lead to the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), especially in women.

This study set out to untie the knot entangling pro-inflammatory food consumption with the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Researchers conducted an in-depth analysis of the dietary and medical records of 3,363 Iranian men and women.

Researchers observed that the likelihood of suffering from irritable bowel syndrome went up by 42% among study participants, particularly women, who ate the highest amounts of pro-inflammatory foods compared to their counterparts who refrained from consuming these foods. The findings of this study reflect the presence of a strong association between generous consumption of pro-inflammatory foods and a rising incidence of irritable bowel syndrome, especially in women.
