Associations between whole grains intake and new-onset hypertension: a prospective cohort study

Adhering to a high whole grain diet may brighten an individual's chances of staying free from hypertension.

This study compared the rate of occurrence of hypertension between consumers and non-consumers of whole grains. Researchers examined the diets and blood pressure numbers of 10,973 men and women recruited from China Health and Nutrition Survey over a 7-year old period. During the course of the study, 3,733 participants were diagnosed with hypertension.

A trend of reduced incidence of hypertension was observed among consistent consumers of whole grains. This study concluded that "higher consumption of whole grains was significantly associated with a lower risk of new-onset hypertension."
