Ultra-Processed Foods and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: What Is the Evidence So Far?

Preference for ultra-processed foods may boost an individual's odds of ending up with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

This study investigated the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among high consumers of ultra-processed foods using a meta-analytic approach. Researchers sifted through data culled from eligible studies. 

Researchers found an upsurge in type 2 diabetes risk with greater intake of ultra-processed foods. This study implicated ultra-processed foods as one of the major culprits that spur the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
