Smoking and the risk of type 2 diabetes in Japan: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

High type 2 diabetes risk is associated with cigarette smoking.

This study evaluated the effect of cigarette smoking on type 2 diabetes risk in Japanese men and women. Researchers conducted a meta-analysis on data extracted from 22 scientific articles that examined 343,573 subjects and 16,383 diabetic patients. They discovered that smokers exhibited a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes was found to increase by 16% for every 10 cigarettes smoked per day. The findings of this study suggest that cigarette smoking may contribute to the high incidence of type 2 diabetes in Japan.
