Consistent consumption of nuts may reduce an individual’s susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus.

This study evaluated the relationship between high dietary intake of nuts and the odds of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in a Middle Eastern population. Researchers tracked the diets of 1,984 subjects recruited from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). The type 2 diabetes odds ratio of each participant in this study was also assessed.

Researchers found out that subjects who regularly consumed at least 4 servings of nuts per week had lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who rarely ate or completely avoid nuts. The results of this study reveal that increased consumption of nuts may decrease the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.
