A significant increase in type 2 diabetes risk is associated with habitual drinking of both artificially and sugar-sweetened beverages.

This study examined the impact of high dietary ingestion of sweetened beverages on the risk of type 2 diabetes. Researchers assessed the diets of 64,749 healthy women and 1,369 women diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during a follow-up period of 14 years.

Researchers noted that increased intake of both artificially and sugar-sweetened beverages resulted in higher risk of type 2 diabetes. This study demonstrates that fondness for sweetened beverages may be a contributing factor to the development of type 2 diabetes.
