Protective association between dietary phytosterol intake and cardiovascular health: an analysis of the UK Biobank cohort
Devout consumption of phytosterol from plant foods may help guard against the occurrence of adverse cardiac events, such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiovascular mortality.
This study examined the ability of a high phytosterol diet to influence the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Researchers recruited 169,207 men and women from the UK Biobank Cohort who volunteered dietary and health information for this study.
Researchers noted that regular ingestion of plant foods rich in phytosterol reduced an individual's probability of suffering from adverse cardiac events, such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiovascular mortality. This study supports the inclusion phytosterol-containing foods as an integral part of a heart healthy diet.
