Low-carbohydrate diets and all-cause mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Diets low on carbohydrates may increase total mortality risk.

This research work investigated the relationship between the consumption of low-carbohydrate diets and total mortality risk. Researchers analyzed data obtained from 17 studies that examined more than 500,000 subjects. The cardiovascular and total mortality hazard risks were assessed in all the subjects.

Researchers discovered that subjects who regularly consumed low-carbohydrate diets had high all-cause mortality risks. High intake of diets low on carbohydrates was found to have no significant effect on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality risk in this study. The findings of this analysis show that elevated total mortality risk are associated with frequent consumers of low-carbohydrate diets.
