Frequent consumers of fruits and vegetables are less likely to die from chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases.

This study examined the effect of high dietary intake of fruits and vegetables on total mortality risk. Researchers collated and analyzed data obtained from sixteen prospective studies that evaluated the relationship between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and all-cause mortality risk.

Researchers observed that consistent consumption of fruits and vegetables decreased total mortality risk, particularly deaths from cardiovascular diseases. However, generous intake of fruits and vegetables was found to have little or no effect on cancer mortality risk in this study. The results of this meta-analysis indicate that eating large servings of fruits and vegetables may reduce the incidence of deaths due to chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular ailments.
