Dietary Polyphenol Intake, but Not the Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity, Is Inversely Related to Cardiovascular Disease in Postmenopausal Polish Women: Results of WOBASZ and WOBASZ II Studies

Diets that encourage the consumption of foods loaded with polyphenols may protect postmenopausal women from cardiovascular disease.

This study comprehensively assessed if regular ingestion of polyphenols from food sources can influence cardiovascular disease risk in postmenopausal women. Researchers utilized data obtained from dietary and health questionnaires to estimate the odds of cardiovascular disease occurring among 2,599 postmenopausal women from Poland.

Researchers found out that the probability of a postmenopausal woman having cardiovascular disease plummeted with increasing intake of polyphenol-rich foods. This study demonstrated that a high polyphenol diet may be a potent dietary weapon for preventing cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women.
