Association between dietary fiber intake and risk of coronary heart disease: a meta-analysis.

Generous intake of dietary fiber, especially cereal and fruit fiber, may help guard against the development of coronary heart disease.

This study evaluated the relationship between habitual consumption of dietary fiber and the occurrence of coronary heart disease (CHD). Researchers analyzed data extracted from 18 published studies that examined 672,408 subjects. They observed a significant protective association between high ingestion of dietary fiber, particularly from cereal and fruit, and coronary heart disease. The findings of this meta-analysis reveal that an individual’s chances of developing coronary heart disease may reduce with increased intake of dietary fiber.
